Luck by Design: Certain Success in an Uncertain World

Richard E. Goldman

Morgan James Publishing,  January 2009

On behalf of my entire generation,
I apologize.

We -- the great Baby Boom generation, we who were going to change the world -- certainly have. Except we haven't exactly changed it for the better. We missed a few steps along the way. If you feel disenfranchised or alienated, you are not alone. Despite our good intentions, the Baby Boomers have compromised your future.

Our bad.

But there are solutions, all of which require hard work, careful thought, consistent effort -- and the luck that you can create to help in all you do, every day.

--Richie

Luck.
Some have it; some don't.

At least it appears that way. Richie Goldman has often been told that he's lucky. And so it seems. Soon after he graduated from college, Goldman invested $3,000 in a startup -- an unknown company with only one store and a hand-lettered black and white sign. A wise investment? Not everyone thought so at the time. But Goldman did his research and listened to his inner voice. Sure enough, that investment -- plus twenty-nine years of hard work -- enabled him to retire early and live what he calls a dream life. Dumb luck? How about some luck!

Goldman knows what it took to get to where he is now. He knows all the work that went into growing that first store and dramatically expanding the company into a nationwide chain: Men's Wearhouse. And he knows that luck is something you create for yourself. With hard work, determination, good timing, and trust -- trust in yourself and in your inner voice.

Goldman starts out Luck by Design: Certain Success in an Uncertain World by highlighting some of what the Baby Boomers have done and what they haven't done in the world. Their actions and inactions have created problems, at home and across the globe. From the environment to world affairs, there are a lot of problems and a lot of work ahead.

Can the problems be solved? Does the work seem insurmountable? Is planning your life insurmountable? Not once you learn how to create your own luck, in life and in the world. Not when you wholeheartedly embrace every adventure and every challenge. Not once you read Luck by Design -- and learn how to design luck into your life.
